How it started

Nakamura Wrestling was established in 2008, after Grant Nakamura retired from competition and moved home to Maui. He had just competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials where he was defeated in the quarterfinals by Henry Cejudo. Since then, Nakamura has dedicated his time to give wrestlers the same opportunities he once had.

About Grant Nakamura

Wrestling

Grant Nakamura was a Hawaii State Wrestling Champion for Baldwin High School in 2001. He attended Iowa State University and was a 3x NCAA Qualifier. Nakamura was a 4x Senior National All-American in freestyle, and qualified for the World Team Trials in 2002, 2006, and 2007. He was a 2008 Olympic Trials participant where he defeated Angel 

Grant Nakamura was a Hawaii State Wrestling Champion for Baldwin High School in 2001. He attended Iowa State University and was a 3x NCAA Qualifier. He was a 2008 Olympic Trials participant where he defeated Angel Escobedo and Brad Pataky. After the Olympic Trials, Nakamura retired from competition and moved home to Maui.


Nakamura started competing again in 2022. In 2023, he won the Greco Roman National Title in Masters Division at the US Nationals. Nakamura went on to represent the USA in the Veterans Worlds Championship and placed 3rd in Freestyle in both 2023 and 2024.


Coaching

Nakamura was part of Iowa State‘s support staff where he was a workout partner for the college athletes and continued to compete in freestyle. He coached at the high school level in Iowa, Missouri, and in Hawaii. Nakamura has continued to coach the youth wrestlers that feed into his Alma Mater. Nakamura is the Head Coach of Alma Mater and Power House Baldwin High School Wrestling.

Our team is made up of passionate wrestling enthusiasts who are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for our wrestlers. We have a total of 8  Individual Hawaii State Wrestling Titles and 4 college wrestlers among our staff.
